Enjoy the last few events of the year from the comfort of home

This year, the City of Vaughan has worked hard to bring residents many events they know and love online to ensure the safety and well-being of the community throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. But the curtains have not yet closed on the City’s 2020 online events.

There are still a few exciting virtual events and festive celebrations happening before the end of 2020:

Vaughan Accessibility Champion Awards
Established in 2019 by the City’s Accessibility Advisory Committee, the award recognizes businesses and individuals that foster inclusivity and advance accessibility throughout the city. Vaughan Accessibility Champions can be nominated in four categories, including:
  • an individual
  • a small business with fewer than 20 employees
  • a medium or large business with 20 or more employees
  • an individual with a disability
Recipients will be honoured at a virtual award ceremony hosted by the City on Thursday, Dec. 3 at 1 p.m. – which is also the International Day of Persons with Disabilities. This event will be streamed online live at vaughan.ca/accessibility

Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony
Light up the night with the City of Vaughan during the annual Christmas Tree Lighting. Residents can tune in on Friday, Dec. 4 at 7 p.m. at vaughan.ca/festive to watch the 36-foot tree at City Hall light and shine bright for the Christmas season. There will be a welcome from the Mayor and Members of Council, a performance by carolers and a countdown to the tree coming to life. A special guest in a big red suit will also be travelling from the North Pole to join in the holiday celebrations.

Menorah Lighting Ceremony
To celebrate the first night of Chanukah, the Menorah Lighting will be on Thursday, Dec. 10 at 4:30 p.m., broadcast live at vaughan.ca/festive. Rabbi Mendel Kaplan, founder and spiritual leader of Chabad Flamingo, will preside over the ceremony which will include the Mayor and Members of Council. The City strongly encourages citizens to celebrate at home and spend time in reflection and thanks.

As 2020 is coming to a close, the City reflects on the many successful events that ran virtually for the first time ever.

Earlier this year, the City held its first virtual Vaughan Celebrates Canada Day featuring Barenaked Ladies and 26th annual Vaughan Celebrates Concerts in the Park series, expanded the Vaughan Culture Days celebration with a month of online activities and programs, and honoured soldiers and veterans who made the ultimate sacrifice with a virtual Remembrance Day ceremony. Thousands of people joined in online from Vaughan and beyond to enjoy and participate in these and other events.

The City of Vaughan would like to thank the sponsors of many of these virtual events – their continued commitment and support made the 2020 events a success!
