The City of Vaughan is introducing you to some of the teams that work hard to support the residents and businesses that call this vibrant community home! Here’s everything to know about Recreation Services

Through the delivery of diverse and inclusive recreation programs, services and events, the department enhances the quality of life and leisure time of the community by supporting the physical, mental and social well-being of our citizens. Through the City’s 10 community centres that include six fitness facilities, five arenas, 10 pools, a community theatre and studio and event space, Recreation Services, in partnership with Community Service Organizations and groups, provides access to a wide range of indoor and outdoor recreation opportunities that keep Vaughan residents of all ages active and engaged.

At these facilities, a wide variety of programs are offered for residents of all ages and interests – from sports, skating and swimming to arts, culinary, science and nature programs, there is something for everyone. Program registration is easy and can be done onlineRecAssist – the City’s fee assistance program – helps subsidize the cost of recreation programs and swim lessons for low-income individuals and families in Vaughan.

The department also manages permits, rentals and bookings for many of Vaughan’s facilities and outdoor amenities, such as City Playhouse Theatre, the Thornhill Outdoor Pool, skating rinks, park gazebos and more.

Keeping kids active during school breaks is a priority for many parents and guardians – and that’s something Recreation Services can help with, too. Young ones can spend their P.A. Days, summer, December and March Breaks having fun at Vaughan camps. Your kids are in good hands there – all camp staff hold a current Standard First Aid certification, provide a Vulnerable Sector Check and participate in an extensive staff training process.

The Recreation Services team also runs events throughout the year that bring the community together to celebrate and have fun! These include the award-winning Vaughan Celebrates Canada Day, Vaughan Celebrates Concerts in the Park and Vaughan Celebrates Winterfest, along with many other City-led festive and cultural celebrations.

Recreation Services is a small but mighty team made up of dedicated staff who truly love what they do. From recreation planners, business and marketing professionals, and customer service representatives to events and front-line operational experts, this multidisciplinary team works together to deliver exceptional programs, services and events to Vaughan. With nearly 1,000 part-time staff, the department is a major employer of youth – mainly students – who enjoy the flexible work hours and shifts, competitive wages, discounted courses and ongoing training that leads to career advancement. Job postings are available to browse on the City’s website
