Join Vaughan’s World Migratory Bird Day event on May 11!
Are your bird sighting skills im-peck-able? Want a chance to spread your wings? Whether you’re an avid or novice bird watcher, you’re invited to attend the City of Vaughan’s World Migratory Bird Day event at the Maple Nature Reserve, located at 10401 Dufferin St.!
On Saturday, May 11, from 10 a.m. to noon, join us to participate in a Big Sit where you’ll learn about bird identification and count the number of species you see and hear, before heading out on a trail walk. It’s sure to be a fun day with our feathered friends!
Here is everything you need to know about the event:
What is a Big Sit?
Big Sits are counting events focused on identifying as many species of birds as possible, while staying within a defined circle. You will be provided with information on what bird species you might expect to find in the Maple Nature Reserve and encouraged to use the eBird app during the event.
What to bring
This is an outdoor event and will be held rain or shine, so please dress for the weather. Wear proper walking shoes and bring a water bottle. You are welcome to bring a lawn chair or blanket for the Big Sit.
The City will supply binoculars (please bring your own if you have them), bird materials (such as guides and checklists), clipboards and pencils.
Where to park
Parking is available onsite. Attendees must use the entrance off Dufferin Street.
Register to attend
People of all ages and birding abilities are welcome. Space is limited, so you’re encouraged to register in advance!
Recognizing World Migratory Bird Day
The City of Vaughan is bird-friendly certified. This means we’ve implemented practices, policies and initiatives to help save birds, protect their habits and improve the local ecosystem. World Migratory Bird Day is one of these events.
World Migratory Bird Day is celebrated on the second Saturday in May, this year on Saturday, May 11 as migratory birds journey to nesting sites. By studying and protecting birds, we can understand the overall health of our ecosystems and the environment.
