Mayor Maurizio Bevilacqua issued the following statement to recognize Labour Day on Monday, Sept. 2:
“Each
year, on the first Monday of September, we gather with family and friends to
celebrate Labour Day and enjoy the last long weekend of summer.
“Traditionally,
this day recognizes the many accomplishments of Canada’s labour movement. The
dedication and discipline of organized skilled labour groups play an integral
role in our city-building efforts. Labour
unions maintain a strong voice in Vaughan and beyond. They are committed to
improving the quality of life for employees, their families and the communities
they serve. These organizations continue to advocate for fair wages, paid sick
days and many other benefits that workers deserve.
“I
encourage all citizens to celebrate this day by exploring all that Vaughan has
to offer — including the City’s recreation programming, art exhibitions, parks
and splash pads, nature walks and trails, and more. Engaging in these
family-friendly activities foster a vibrant community life, providing a unique
opportunity not to be missed.
“As
summer winds down, so come shorter days, cooler evenings and the start of a new
school year. Once again, school zones in our neighbourhoods will see an
increase in pedestrian and vehicular traffic. Whether travelling by bus, car,
bicycle or foot, now is an important time for students and families to review
back-to-school safety tips.
“Public
safety is our number one priority. As one of the safest communities in Canada, Vaughan
is committed to the protection and well-being of our citizens, visitors and
businesses. We all share the responsibility of ensuring children get to school
and arrive home each day without harm.
“Wishing
everyone a safe and happy Labour Day and students every success for the coming
school year!

information on municipal closures and reminders for residents can be found in the
City of Vaughan’s Labour
Day PSA.”
