New YRP substation serving west end Vaughan
On Nov. 29, Mayor Steven Del Duca joined York Regional Police (YRP) Chief Jim MacSween to announce an innovative partnership that will soon bring the first YRP substation in Vaughan’s west end to serve and protect the residents living in these neighbourhoods!
Expected to start operating in early 2025, the establishment of this substation was spearheaded by the City, which owns the building it will be housed in at 10418 Islington Avenue in Kleinburg. The City is currently retrofitting the property to meet the requirements of the police service.
Members of Vaughan Council, including Deputy Mayor, Local and Regional Councillor Linda Jackson, who serves on the York Regional Police Service Board, were in attendance to mark this important community safety announcement. Mayor Del Duca and Deputy Mayor Jackson led efforts for the new west-end substation which will reside in YRP’s #4 District.
The future site will be a 3,600-square-foot substation where community members can interact with police officers, file reports, receive crime prevention information and ask questions about the service or policing in general. Once up and running, this facility will operate similarly to the substation in the Vaughan Metropolitan Centre, which Mayor Del Duca and Chief MacSween marked the opening of in September 2024.
In September 2024, Mayor Del Duca gave a deputation at York Region Council expressing his strong support for additional funding for YRP. The 2025 budget for YRP, approved on Nov. 28, includes a 7.7 per cent increase from 2024 and will lead directly to the hiring of 154 additional YRP staff in 2025 and 150 in 2026.
Vaughan Council knows community safety and resourcing YRP’s brave front-line officers is fundamental to city-building. Community Safety and Well-Being is one of seven strategic priority areas in the 2022 to 2026 Term of Council Service Excellence Strategic Plan, which continues to inform City Council’s efforts.
QUOTES
“Vaughan has always been a safe community, but in recent years, too many of our residents have had to deal with auto theft and home break-ins, and we’ve seen gun crime on the rise. Enough is enough – keeping our residents safe is one of my most important responsibilities. That’s why I’m very happy to have the City partner with YRP to open this much needed substation that will boost the police presence in Kleinburg and Woodbridge. And it’s also why I requested my call for real bail reform that keeps the criminals off our streets and behind bars.”
- Mayor Steven Del Duca
“This substation will provide this community with access to YRP officers to respond to and investigate local crimes, while preserving community safety in Kleinburg. Community safety is a shared responsibility. This collaboration with the City of Vaughan is a strong example of how partnerships are critical in ensuring the progression of safe and sustainable communities.”
-York Regional Police Chief Jim MacSween
