Get your permits first!

 

May is Building Safety Month – which provides an opportunity for the City of Vaughan to remind everyone to prioritize safety when planning construction projects. Whether you are building a backyard deck, renovating a room in your home or developing a condo complex, you need to ensure the work will be done safely and correctly. Getting the proper permits before the job starts is the first step. 

 

Before you begin, check what permits are needed for your project. Permits are required for a variety of new construction projects and renovations, including pools, cabanas, sheds, new entrances to homes or a new subdivision. Review the types of pool permits, grading permits and building permits required for various residential projects. Another resource to find important information is Ontario One Call – a not-for-profit organization that facilitates excavation locate requests to ensure homeowners and infrastructure assets, such as buried cables, wires and cables, are safe when digging. As one of the fastest-growing municipalities in Canada, developers are choosing to build in Vaughan. In 2022, the City issued 3,197 permits and performed 48,009 inspections. This amounts to $1.752 billion in building construction value – a significant investment into the community.

 

Apply for permits online

To better support you, the City has transferred its permitting process online, offering a more streamlined and user-friendly experience. Through Service Vaughan, you can conveniently apply for, submit, track and pay for permits, all at the click of a button. As well, a variety of building, grading and engineering permits are available, including infrastructure engineering drawing requests, pool inspection requests, pool permit renewals, development permits, grading permits and more. You can also request a copy of your home survey, apply for a permit to construct a deck, shed, sunroom or pool, and use the online development charge estimator tool before signing a new lease.

 

New to Service Vaughan is a fully paperless development planning process – this upgrade enables you to electronically submit development applications (including for Pre-Application Consultation, Official Plan Amendment, Zoning By-law Amendment, Site Development, Part Lot Control, Interim Control, Draft Plan of Subdivision, Draft Plan of Standard Condominium, and Common Element/Vacant Land Condominium), application-related information and drawings, virtually, with a secure login.
