Canada Day is just around the corner and as you prepare for the long weekend, the City of Vaughan is reminding everyone of facility closures, modified hours and alternate programming effective Saturday, June 29 to Monday, July 1. Here is everything you need to know to plan ahead.

 

Municipal facilities

Most facilities – including Vaughan City Hall, located at 2141 Major Mackenzie Dr. – will be closed from Saturday, June 29 to Monday, July 1, reopening on Tuesday, July 2. Essential services, such as fire and emergency response and by-law and enforcement services, will continue uninterrupted. 

 

Community centres and recreational programming

Vaughan community centres will be closed on Monday, July 1 and will reopen for regularly scheduled recreational drop-in activities on Tuesday, July 2. Summer recreation programs, swim lessons and aquatic leadership courses, as well as summer camps, begin on Tuesday, July 2.

The Thornhill Outdoor Pool, located at 26 Old Yonge St., will be open from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. for recreational swims, length swimming and an aquafitness class on Canada Day. Registration and pre-payment are available at vaughan.perfectmind.com. For details, visit vaughan.ca/swim.

 

Celebrate Canada Day with us

No plans yet for the long weekend? Come out to the City’s award-winning annual Vaughan Celebrates Canada Day event on Monday, July 1 at Boyd Conservation Area (8739 Islington Ave.) from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., headlined by Kardinal Offishall! This free, fun-filled family event will include entertainment, activities, food vendors, a business zone and much more.

Vaughan Public Libraries

All Vaughan Public Libraries (VPL) branches will be closed on Monday, July 1, and will re-open on Tuesday, July 2 for regular business hours. To view the hours of operation at all VPL branches, visit vaughanpl.info

 

Looking for something to do on Canada Day? Join VPL’s TD Summer Reading Club and report on your child’s reading each week to earn a badge and be entered in a weekly prize draw! Staying in? Have fun at home with VPL! With an internet connection and a VPL library card, you can enjoy many free online resources available through VPL’s website, including access to eBooks and eAudiobooks, films and television programs, music streaming services, e-learning courses, bilingual materials and more.

 

Waste collection 

Waste collection for the week of July 1 will not change. Please have your waste set out by 7 a.m. on your regular collection day. 

 

You can register online to purchase garbage tags, blue boxes and green bins and exchange broken City-branded bins through Service Vaughan. Download the Recycle Coach app through the Apple App Store or Google Play for a personalized collection schedule, custom pick-up reminders and the “What Goes Where?” search tool. For the complete curbside collection schedule for 2024, visit vaughan.ca/WasteCalendar

Vaughan Animal Services

The Vaughan Animal Services Shelter will be open during regular business hours on Saturday, June 29, and will be closed to the public on Sunday, June 30 and Monday, July 1. You can purchase pet licensing tags online at any time through Service Vaughan. For more information, visit vaughan.ca/AnimalServices.

 

Service Vaughan

The City’s contact centre at Vaughan City Hall will be closed on Monday, July 1 and resume regular hours on Tuesday, July 2. However, a live agent will be available by phone to respond to municipal emergencies over the weekend and on Monday, July 1. If you call to report a municipal emergency, please stay on the line to be connected to the after-hours answering service.
