Have a question about a service in Vaughan? Want to know more about a City program? The Service Vaughan team is standing by ready to respond to your inquiries. The City of Vaughan’s contact centre can be reached by phone at 905-832-2281 (toll-free: 1-844-832-2112), email at service@vaughan.ca, online at vaughan.ca/ServiceVaughan or in-person at Vaughan City Hall (2141 Major Mackenzie Dr.).

Every month, the City releases a series called ‘You Asked, We Answered,’ where common questions received and responded to by Service Vaughan are highlighted.

Below are the top five inquiries from August:

1. When does leaf and yard waste collection take place?

The City’s leaf and yard waste collection takes place every other week in the summer, and weekly in the fall on your regularly scheduled collection day. Bi-weekly collection will continue until the week of Oct. 16, at which time weekly collection will begin.

Place your materials at the curb no earlier than 6 p.m. the night before and no later than 7 a.m. on your scheduled collection day. If you hire a lawn care service company, they must be notified of these requirements. If the forecast calls for inclement weather overnight – like strong winds or heavy rain – wait to place your materials out in the morning.

Leaf and yard waste must be placed out in Kraft paper bags or open-top rigid containers with handles, up to 121 litres (32 gallons) in size, and clearly marked “Leaf and Yard Waste.” Plastic bags are not permitted. Kraft paper bags must be kept dry – wet or degraded bags cannot be picked up as they will break during collection.

Visit the City’s leaf and yard waste webpage for more information.

2. Where do I report garbage or litter in parks and other public spaces?

Let’s work together to keep Vaughan’s parks and trails clean. For the safety and well-being of everyone in the community, littering and dumping are prohibited under the Dumping By-law 103-2020 (PDF). Individuals found dumping their household garbage are subject to a maximum fine of $5,000 per offence.

If you witness illegal dumping or littering, please report it to Service Vaughan at 905-832-2281 or service@vaughan.ca. You can also report litter online.

3. How can I register my kids for fall recreation programs?

Registration for fall recreation programs, swim lessons and aquatic leadership courses is underway, so sign up to reserve your child’s spot today! Programming begins Saturday, Sept. 23 at all community centres and the Vaughan Studios & Events Space, except for aquatic programs at the pool at Garnet A. Williams Community Centre, which remains closed due to ongoing renovations. Check out the Fall Recreation eGuide or see the full schedule at vaughan.perfectmind.com.

The online registration system is available 24-7 and features enhanced search filters, allowing you to sort by level, location, day and time. Details can be found at vaughan.ca/recreation. If you require assistance creating an online registration account or registering, call Service Vaughan at 905-832-2281, email rec@vaughan.ca or visit your local community centre.

4. After I submit a tree maintenance service request (e.g. tree pruning or stump removal), how long will it take before City staff visit the tree site?

It depends on the situation. Requests for urgent maintenance services that pose a danger to the public – such as a fallen tree – are dealt with as soon as possible. Non-emergency requests that follow our pruning schedule will be addressed accordingly, while all other requests will be managed in priority sequence, following an inspection. Once a service request is created, a forestry inspector will visit the site within 30 business days to examine the tree's condition and determine next steps. The forestry inspector will contact you (by phone or leave a notice on your door) with the status of your request. Please note: it can take up to eight months for a tree to be pruned and up to 12 months for a tree stump to be removed following a tree removal.

5. Where can I report damaged playground equipment?

Keeping our parks in good condition is a priority. If you see a playground, park or splashpad in need of repair, you can report it online through Service Vaughan. Open a ticket request under ‘Parks, Trees and Grass,’ and staff will address the site in priority sequence. To report a municipal emergency or problem that requires immediate attention, like a damaged portable washroom unit, call Service Vaughan at 905-832-2281.
