What is an AED?

An AED is a portable device used to treat victims of sudden cardiac arrest. Cardiac arrest is a serious medical emergency when the heart stops beating. Eight in 10 cardiac arrests happen in the home or in a public place. After calling 9-1-1, the combination of CPR and the use of an AED can increase the likelihood of saving a person’s life by 75 per cent or more over CPR alone*.

The Maple Library and Community Centre, located at 10190 Keele Street, is the City’s largest community centre at approximately 148,000 square feet in size. It is located in one of Vaughan’s busiest areas and continues to serve the expanding diverse local community. New residential construction in the centre’s close proximity will also add to the number of members it caters to.

Road Operations maintain the City’s road network including asphalt and sidewalk repair and maintenance of road markings, street sweeping and winter maintenance.

Traffic Services manage safer and efficient movement of pedestrian and vehicular traffic across the City on the local road network including traffic signs and pavement markings as well as speed compliance and traffic management.

A critical component of the study is engaging residents in the Athabasca community for public input. Residents were invited to attend a second virtual Public Information Session via Zoom on Monday, June 20 at 7 p.m. to learn about and comment on proposed traffic solutions for the area. For several years now, the ‘Growing to Give’ project has been a true community garden success, providing residents with the opportunity to grow vegetables in a community setting, and gain hands-on education about gardening and cooking their own food. The garden volunteers have generously donated portions of their harvest to community organizations and individuals in need. In 2013, the garden volunteers donated over 100 kilograms of organic produce!

Who are the Urban Growers?

They are 4 university students highly passionate about the environment and their communities. Combining these interests drove them to be part of the climate action program Innovate MY Future, which supports young adults in designing a local project aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions and mitigating climate change. They decided to focus on the topic of local food and pollinators.
