Vaughan Powers Down for Earth Hour

​The City of Vaughan and its residents and businesses joined millions around the world by turning out the lights for Earth Hour on Saturday, March 31.

PowerStream reported that Vaughan reduced its energy consumption by 8.6 per cent. By turning off the lights between 8:30 p.m. and 9:30 p.m., the City reduced its energy use by 27 megawatts, enough energy to power approximately 817 average-sized homes for 24 hours.

Vaughan Turns Out the Lights for Earth Hour

​The City of Vaughan will turn of all non-essential lighting at City facilities for one hour beginning at 8:30 p.m. in support of Earth Hour 2011 on Saturday, March 26. Created by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), Earth Hour is a one hour lights out event that mobilizes millions worldwide to show support for action against climate change.
 
Earth Hour 2010 became the biggest Earth Hour ever with a record 4,616 cities in 128 countries participating around the world.

City Of Vaughan Accepting Nominations For Volunteer Recognition Awards

​In celebration of National Volunteer Week, April 15 to 21, the City is inviting not-for-profit organizations and community groups to nominate their most outstanding volunteer of 2011 for a City of Vaughan Volunteer Recognition Award. The nomination deadline is Friday, March 16, 2012.
 
This year’s theme is “Volunteers: Passion, Action, Impact.” Nominations will be accepted for one of two age groups: Youth volunteers for individuals between the ages of 15 to 24, and adult volunteers for individuals aged 25 years and older.

Red Cross Flag Raising Ceremony at City Hall

Mayor Maurizio Bevilacqua and Members of Council were joined by representatives of the Red Cross at a flag raising ceremony to celebrate the City of Vaughan proclaiming March as Red Cross month.

The Red Cross has responded to emergencies in Vaughan and across the country. Their mandate is to raise public awareness as well as educate individuals and communities on emergency preparedness, first aid, CPR and humanitarian issues.

Discovery Centre To Celebrate The Life And Work Of Pierre Berton

​The City of Vaughan is undertaking a feasibility study to establish a Discovery Centre that celebrates the life and work of the late Pierre Berton. A long-term resident of the Vaughan community of Kleinburg, the celebrated author and television personality published more than 50 books on Canada's history and the shaping of the national character.

City Of Vaughan Receives Top Honours For Business Development Publication

The City of Vaughan has earned an Award of Excellence for its business development publication Vaughan Building a Gateway to Tomorrow’s Economy. The 2011 marketing award was given by the Economic Developers Council of Ontario (EDCO). Vaughan  Council was presented with the award yesterday by members of the City’s Economic Development Department.
 
"This award recognizes the best in economic development programs and marketing materials," said Mayor Maurizio Bevilacqua.
